Part: A
(Answer any three questions)

1. ⁢(a) What is Poisson’s ratio? State and explain Hooke’s law.

(b) Show that in any type of strain work done per unit volume is equal to 1/2 × stress × strain.

(c) Prove that Y=2η (1+λ), Where the symbols have their usual meaning.

2. (a) Discuss different types of flow.

(b) Derive an expression for the rate of flow of a liquid through a pipe line.

(c) Discuss the necessary corrections for Poiseuille’s equation.

3. (a) Define surface energy. Find the relation between surface tension and surface energy.

(b) Derive an expression for the height ‘h’ through which a liquid of surface tension will rise in a capillary tube of radius r.

(c) A capillary tube has radius 0.5*10⁻³m and density of water is 0.9*10³kgm⁻³. The tube is dipped in water partially in vertical position. Find the height of water column if surface tension of water is 7.2*10⁻²N/m.
