Part: A
(Answer any three questions)
1. (a) State the laws of thermodynamics. Discuss the limitations of 1st law of thermodynamics.
(b) Define thermodynamic system. State various types of thermodynamic system with example.
(c) 0.1 m³ of air at a pressure of 1.5 bar is expanded isothermally to 0.5 m³. Calculate the final pressure of the gas and heat supplied during the process.

2. (a) Define boiler. State the functions of boiler mountings.
(b) Illustrate the role of steam boilers in the textile manufacturing process.
(c) Compare fire tube boiler with water tube boiler.
(d) A boiler is made of iron plates 12 mm thick, if the temperature of the outside surface 120° C and that of the inner 100° C, calculate the mass of water evaporated per hour. Assume that the area of the heating surface is 5 m² and k for iron as 84 W/mK.

3. (a) Define compression ratio. Draw P-V and T-S diagrams for Otto cycle and Diesel cycle.
(b) Describe the working principle of a four stroke Diesel engine with neat sketch.
(c) A four cylinder two stroke cycle petrol engine develops 23.5 KW brake power at 2500 r.p.m. The mean effective pressure on each piston is 8.5 bar and the mechanical efficiency is 85%. Calculate the diameter and stroke of each cylinder, assuming the length of stroke equal to 1.5 times the diameter of cylinder.
