1. (a) What is a robot? Discuss the envelopes of different types of robot manipulators with necessary diagram.
(b) Discuss different robot programming modes.
(c) Derive the differential relationship between the joint displacements and the end-effector location for a two degree of freedom planar robot arm. Also, discuss the properties of the Jacobian matrix.

2. (a) Discuss the characteristics of the series wound and shunt wound DC motor.
(b) Describe how pressure regulator regulates pressure in a pneumatic system.
(c) Explain the operating principle of electromechanical relay and its applications.

3. (a) Explain how the LVDT can be used as a position sensor.
(b) Describe the working principle of different types of temperature sensor.
(c) A strain gauge and bridge circuit are used to measure the tension force in a bar of steel () that has a cross-sectional area of 13 . The strain gauge has a nominal resistance of 120 Ω and a GF of 2. The bridge is supplied with 10 V. When the bar is unloaded, the bridge is balanced so the output is 0 V. Then force is applied to the bar, and the bridge voltage goes to 0.0005 V. Find the force on the bar.

(b) Discuss the basic steps in a control program scan (loop).
(c) Draw and describe how electromechanical relay can be used with digital controller to open and close a circuit.
