Twist Factor

Twist Factor (also known as Twist Multiplier or TM) is a fundamental concept in textile engineering. It establishes the relationship between yarn count and the amount of twist applied, directly influencing the yarn's quality, strength, and feel.

What is Twist Factor?

While yarn count defines thickness, the Twist Factor determines the degree of compactness or softness. For the same yarn count, varying the TPI (Twist Per Inch) changes the yarn's characteristics. A higher twist makes the yarn compact and hard, while a lower twist keeps it soft. The Twist Factor is the numerical value used to maintain a specific level of "twist intensity" across different yarn counts.

Key Examples

Case 1: A 36s count yarn with a TM of 4 requires 24 TPI.

Case 2: A 16s count yarn with the same TM of 4 requires 16 TPI.

Even though the TPI differs, both yarns will have the same level of softness/compactness because their Twist Factor is identical.

Importance and Application

1. Consistency: It allows manufacturers to produce yarns of different thicknesses with same compactness.

2. End-Use Specificity:

* Knitting Yarn: Generally requires a lower TM (around 3.5 to 4.0) to ensure the yarn is soft and flexible.

* Weaving Yarn: Requires a higher TM (around 4.5 to 5.5) to make the yarn stronger and more compact to withstand the stresses of the loom.

3. Physical Properties: TM influences yarn strength, diameter, elongation, and abrasion resistance.

Setting the Twist Factor in Production

On a Ring Spinning machine, the Twist Factor is not set directly. Instead, engineers calculate the required TPI based on the desired TM and the yarn count being produced. The machine is then adjusted to deliver that specific TPI. For example, to achieve a TM of 4 for a 20s count yarn, the machine must be set to 17.88 TPI.

The Twist Factor is a vital tool for textile technologists. By understanding and controlling TM, spinners can precisely engineer yarn to meet the specific requirements of strength, durability, and hand-feel for various textile applications of the yarn.
